Discover Your VUture – now available in English
Good news for international first-year students: the online study reflection game of the VU Education Lab, Discover Your VUture, is now also available in English. In September 2020, Discover Your VUture was already delivered VU-wide for Dutch-speaking first-year bachelor’s students, and now the game can be used within every bachelor programme of VU Amsterdam (Dutch-speaking or international).
Discover Your VUture offers first-year students a trigger to think about their study career at VU Amsterdam, by offering concrete goals and tools that the student can immediately work with.
By asking questions such as “Which magazine would you pick up first?”, “What do you prefer to do as extracurricular activities?” and “Do you want to do an in-depth minor or would you rather do an internship on the Zuidas?”, first-year students end up with a profile such as “Career Tiger” or “World Citizen”.
After reading the profile, the students can ask themselves: does this profile suit me? What type of academic would I like to be when I graduate? The students can then discuss this with each other, under the guidance of their (student) mentor or tutor. The mentor or lecturer can then tell the students which options within the curriculum match the profiles from the game, or which VU facilities from the extensive list of ‘VU tips’ they recommend.
By offering this reflection exercise in the form of a playful self-test, of which there are many on social media, the exercise is an accessible way to show students that studying is more than just reading books and taking exams.
A manual for Discover Your VUture is available in both languages for teachers, mentors and tutors.
